As a website that primarily supports sustainable small businesses, I’m certaintly biased towards this, but with good reason. I just want to walk through some of the key reasons why supporting these businesses makes a real difference.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to argue against “big business.” Patagonia and North Face are both examples of big businesses that have shown strong commitments to sustainability. However, my mission is to help small businesses grow, because they make a huge difference and bring something unique to the table.
1. Small Companies That Promote Sustainability Goals Create Real Impact
In today’s age, it’s important to support the environment in every way possible. Carbon emission are at an all time high, global energy needs keep climbing, and progress toward renewable energy faces major challenges. While 99.999% of us aren’t CEOs of renewable energy companies, we do have the power to make choices to support the environment
We can recycle, reduce waste, compost, practice “leave no trace.” etc. But one of the most impactful steps is to support businesses that prioritize sustainability. When you buy from these companies, not only are you buying an eco-friendly product, but you’re helping these business grow into larger, ethical businesses that keep their green values at the core.
2. Their Products Showcase Creativity You Can’t Find Elsewhere
Small business are great because they thrive on creativity. They take risks, innovate freely, and pour hard work into every detail of their work. They portray the type of creativity that should be showcased and celebrated on a large scale. These businesses truly have a passion for what they do, and create incredible products that I believe should be recognized.
3. Supporting Small Businesses Directly Impact The Life Of That Creator
Like I mentioned above, I an not “anti-big business”. Large businesses can (and do) make a difference when they commit to sustainability. As an example, Patagonia incorporates recyclable material in their clothing, Tentree plants a tree every ten items that are sold, and NEMO creates recyclable sleeping bags and backpacks. Large brands clearly have the capability to focus on sustainability, and when they do they make a big impact.
But the reason I champion for small businesses is because when you purchase from them, you directly impact the life of that creator. Their livelihood, growth, and ability to continue creating often depends on a small following of customers taking a chance on them. By buying from them, you’re helping someone’s dream by promoting their livelihood and building their following.
At the end of the day, supporting sustainable small businesses goes way beyond just buying a product. It’s about encouraging creativity, fueling ethical growth, and making a tangible difference. Whether it not be today or tomorrow, I hope that you can find the right time to support an eco-friendly small business.
